A Historic Visit: His Holiness Mar Awa Royel Visits the Assyrian Community Center

President Carolyn Odisho and the Executive Committee of the Assyrian American Cultural Organization of Arizona were honored to welcome His Holiness Mar Awa Royel, Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East to the AACO Community Center, during a memorable visit that brought faith, heritage, and unity into vibrant focus for the local Assyrian-American community.

Mar Awa Royel, the first Western-born Catholicos-Patriarch and a powerful advocate for Assyrian identity and Christian faith, was greeted with warm applause and heartfelt speeches by the AACO President and other community leaders. Mar Awa Royel’s visit marked a momentous occasion for AACO, symbolizing a strong connection between the ancient Church and the diaspora community in the United States.

During the welcoming ceremony, Mar Awa addressed the audience with a message of hope, resilience, and commitment to preserving Assyrian language, culture, and Christian values in the face of modern challenges. Subsequently, attendees took part in a breakfast and the occasion symbolized the deep-rooted heritage and sense of community that continues to exist within the Arizona Assyrian population.

His Holiness toured the facility, met with members, and blessed community members with personal words of encouragement and prayer. His approachability and genuine interest in the community’s work were a source of inspiration for all present.

Community leaders also took the opportunity to discuss ongoing initiatives with Mar Awa, including cultural preservation programs and collaboration amongst organizations. His Holiness praised AACO’s dedication and offered guidance on strengthening ties between the Church and local organizations.

As the visit came to a close, the atmosphere was filled with gratitude and pride; the community left feeling not only blessed but also reinvigorated in its mission to serve, preserve, and grow.

The Assyrian American Cultural Organization thanks His Holiness Mar Awa Royel for his time, wisdom, and leadership. His visit will be remembered as a landmark moment and a powerful reminder that even across continents and generations, our faith and culture endure.
